Try Out for Maine Roller Derby’s 20th Season
Portland, Maine – July 27, 2026 – Maine Roller Derby (MRD) is thrilled to be starting their 20th anniversary season by recruiting new members. An Info Night will take place from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1 at Kendrick & Bloom (160 Presumpscot St, Portland) and Tryouts will be held on Thursday, September 3, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Happy Wheels Skate Center (3 Chabot St, Westbrook). If you are interested in joining MRD as a skater, skating official, non-skating official, or volunteer, now is a great time to get involved.
MRD welcomes officials (both on-skates and off-skates) and volunteers of all genders. Our inclusive gender policy for skaters includes those identifying as female, non-binary, gender expansive, and those who feel most comfortable skating with a women’s roller derby league. All skaters must be 18+.
“If you’re interested in joining as a skater or skating official, you’ll need to have a few basic skating skills first. We’ll teach you everything else in time! We always need more non-skating officials and volunteers to make roller derby happen! Anyone who’s even the least bit interested should come check us out. There’s a place for everyone in our league,” said Chopped Liver, the Head of New Recruits.
Info Night – September 1, 2026, 6:00-7:00 PM – Whether you’re looking to roll, ref, or just help out, attend our info night to learn more about the sport, meet League members, and discover the fascinating world of roller derby!
Tryouts – September 3, 2026, 7:00-9:00 PM – All gear (roller skates, helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads, mouth guard) and basic skating skills are required (no exceptions). Basic skating skills include:
- Picking up each foot while skating
- Controlling balance while on skates
- Propelling yourself forward (knowledge of crossovers is helpful, but not essential)
- Stopping (experience with plow stops is especially helpful)
